It's nice to see Andrew back, I went out and bought the trilogy DVD set yesterday because of this podcast, mainly because I haven't seen the first one in so long and I've wanted to see the third movie, but the second is nearly unwatchable.
Is this the set that comes with the little toy of the Marauder armor from Starship Troopers 3?
Even though I thought the 1st Starship Troopers was a ripoff of Space: A&A, it was still entertaining.
2 & 3 well....I really wasn't that impressed with them. The only thing that made me relieved about the sequels were that they were wearing powered suits this time.
PS: Welcome back Andrew....no hard feelings?
I'm serious, no jokes this time, scout's honor.

What's Space: A&A?
-Jeremy
If I had to guess, I'd think maybe he meant "Space: A & B? As in, "Space: Above and Beyond", the old series on Fox. I remember when I first saw the first Starship Troopers, S:A&B was the first thing I thought of. But maybe he means something else entirely.

Dear Jeremy,
I truly apologize for the mistaken acronym.
NekroDave is correct. What I really meant was Space: A & B over A & A. I was indeed referring to Space: Above & Beyond. A 1995-96 Military SF series created by Glen Morgan & James Wong of X-Files fame. It premiered on Fox Network on Sundays, then it was moved to Fridays, and then it was rescheduled on Saturdays.
Take a look at these clips here 1st, here 2nd, and here 3rd
Check these out and you'll see why I've suspected Paul Verhoeven totally ripped that show off to make his Starship Troopers movie.
I gotta tell yah, The first clip of 'Space: A & B' is my all time favorite opening!

Oh, I vaugely recall seeing this series a few times back in the day. But uh, this show as I recall was kind of like Aliens, which was based on Starship Troopers in the first place. Cameron made the cast read Starship Troopers!
-Jeremy
I should've known that Starship Troopers inspired Cameron to make Aliens that awesome. This would definitely explains Ripley's Hauler mecha & the Space Marines vs. colonial xenodrones defending their badass queen. This would probably explained why Cameron didn't bother pursuing the director's chair for Starship Troopers.
As for the show's origins, Morgan & Wang probably got the physical asthetics from the Aliens movie, but they went on record that they never read Heinlein's novel beforehand. They've based their 'Space: A & B' show from another military SF space novel 'The Forever War' by Joe Haldeman and 'The Red Badge of Courage' by Stephen Crane. The execution of the show proved that those guys really done their homework just like Cameron did for his Aliens flick.
As for Mr. Verhoeven...
Well, he took the easy way out by cheating lol!

"The Forever War", woooh! =)

Well, Starship Troopers 2 was ALMOST unwatchable, till Kelly Carlson naked boobs were on screen.
Yes its cheap, yes its stupid... but at least it give the viewer something to look forward too in the second movie.
