16 comments postedGood podcast. One thing, Starship Troopers was originally published in Japan by Hayakawa in 1967:

The one with the Studio Nue artwork came later, in 1977.
I also agree with Ginrai's assessment that Roughnecks is the adaptation that's truest in spirit to the original novel. But wow, this anime was a huge letdown when it was released. American fanboys were waiting for it with baited breath, but then as the first couple of episodes reached our shores, people really started bitching. We were totally spoiled by the mecha renaissance of the 80s and this truly capped it off with a whimper, not a bang.
Way cooler than Lion Team!
Maybe Golion is better than Dairugger but in their Voltron versions Lion Team was... butt. Silly, childish, and I was only kind of into it as a kid. Vehicle Team had GIANT SPACE WARS, and no Nannies or stupid pastel space mice.
Plus its a cooler looking machine. I am proud to have the big combining toy of it. (As seen in my Christmas competition entry. Did you guys even pick a winner for that? I did my entry as a photographic comic!)
Though I still need to put it and the Trendmasters Lion Team rerelease together and make it so Lion Team is properly inferior next to Vehicle.
Apparently the starship troopers OVA was so popular, people would rather talk about vehicle voltron. :)
I saw the vehicle voltron preview that came with the Go Lion vol. 1 DVD. I was thinking of picking up Dairugger XV, when it may be released out in 2009, out of a bit of curiosity and nostalgia. After seeing the preview, I'm gonna skip it. The animation quality hasn't aged well. I think the first Yamato TV series may look better.
Oh, I should mention that Go Lion gets very episodic after the Princess pilots the blue lion for the first time (episode 7?). Occasionally episodes come along that advance the plot, like when Sincle arrives, but they always come after 7 or 8 stand-alone shows.
Was there actually a show for Voltron II (the three robots voltron toy)? I remember seeing pictures on a box with the voltron II toy, but that was more than 20 years ago. I may be mistaken.
Dammit Roger, I wish I had known that before we recorded. Ah well. The point about the influential nature of the power suit design still stands! I should have fact checked but just like Andrew say! I blame you, Andrew! Watch me pass the buck! Haha.
Ah, so Go Lion does end up being episodic like I remember. Ah well. Wish it kept up the serial storytelling. Is there maybe a list somewhere of the episodes that actually advance the plot?
I do think Vehicle Voltron is way more enjoyable than Lion Voltron. I like the kind of "Star Trek with robots" thing it has going on. If they really do release Dairugger XV here I will definitely buy it.

I didn't know it was originally translated in the 60s until I found that page recently. I always thought the 70s one with the Studio Nue illustrations was the first Japanese-language edition of the book. Guess I was wrong.
The influence on Gundam is definitely there, though. The now-defunct Gundam Museum in Matsudo featured an "in-universe" exhibit on the history of the mobile suit, and the powered suit was shown as an early example of space colony technology that led to the Zaku. The illustration they used was one of the Studio Nue illustrations from the Hayakawa edition of ST.
I watched the first few episodes of the subbed Golion recently and loved it. It had everything: insanely nasty bad guys, cannibalism, giant monsters, and super-intelligent mice.
I know that the non-lion, non-vehicle voltron toys (the one with three robots that combined into one) came from the anime Albegas, but I don't think it ever made it to American TV. Before Voltron, Albegas was issued as a Godaikin along with Golion, too.
Wait, did Albegas make it as a Godaikin, or am I confusing it with that Albega vehicle thing?
And was Dairugger released as a Godaikin?
Albega was not a godaikin, but their support ships - new Super Abega were.
Dairugger was never a godaikin.

Right...Josh might have some knowledge of Voltron toys and their Japanese ancestors(2)! So, Matchbox had the rights to all original Japanese toys to be marketed here as "Voltron", right? Well...except for Bandai America's Godaikin Abega (which was marketed here with no connection to Voltron). But the Popy ST's and whatnot were Matchbox.
And, again correct me if I'm wrong, but original (American) "Voltron" toys were made by both Matchbox and other companies (like Panosh Place), right? But Matchbox still had all the original Japanese stuff to repackage?

These Go Lion episodes advance the plot: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,14,17,...
I've only seen ep 1-18. I'll finish the list once I've seen the whole series.
EDIT:
add episodes 41,50,51 and 52.
If you think I've left some episodes out, please let me know.
Wow, thanks Account15! I appreciate it! I will totally skip to those episodes.

The first list is in error. My bad.
Take this list with a grain of salt. I'm working from a voltron episode guide for every episode after 36. I'm not sure all the voltron episode numbers correspond to go lion episode numbers correctly. It seems some go lion episodes were presented out-of-order in voltron.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,14,17,
20,21,23,32,37,39,40,41,45,48,49,50,51,52
23 _is_ the one where the princess looses her top while swimming :)
Damn, the first set only goes up to episode 18! :)

It was January 1963 when Johnny came home with a gift for me............
I got the reference.
I'm impressed and amazed someone knew what I was singing. Good show!

Another great podcast guys. I read the book years ago but for the life of me I can't remember much more about it other than the dry matter of fact quality in which the story was told; which I think worked for the subject matter. It's too bad this is tough to find as I might enjoy it much as I enjoyed another one you reviewed Orgus II.
Thanks to the Internet, it's not too hard to find the recently released fansub for the Starship Troopers anime.
