¡Soy un Gnomo!

I think the first I recall of Gnomes in my life was the 1980 TV special my mom did bother to tape off CBS one night in the early 80's that is still in the house (though the tape is gummed to hell at this point), but I also found the Gnomes book at a used book swap meet thing that was held at a shopping mall one year and thought it was amusing to see the page talking about female gnomes with a shy 97 year old showing off her tits!

I did watch some episodes of David The Gnome back when Nick Jr. started (it didn't really get called "Nick Jr." until '87 I think, before then, it was simply pre-schooler dribble they would play like Pinwheel). Nickelodeon's Nick at Nite didn't start until 1985, before then they would go off the air around 8PM as another channel took it's place for the remainder of the night. They didn't necessarily go 24/7 until Nick at Nite started, but before, and even afterwards, Nickelodeon didn't really have the money or power to produce original content (especially animation) so often acquiring pre-made shows, reruns and stuff from overseas made up much of it's line-up in those days in the 80's. I already mentioned a good deal about the 1980's at another podcast digging deep into the world of obscure anime movies since essentially much what you said about how lucky we were to see any of it applies to anime fandom itself. I do think though our generation benefited greatly from that era best (except Die-anne, who's only TV buddy was PBS it seems). Today's generation don't realize what we had to go through at all, yet at the same time, it was nice being exposed to what Euro kids had for entertainment when it wasn't American stuff shoved down their throats like we think.

The reason for the odd 2 second scrolling caption is perhaps a problem with the actual timing of the opening itself. In Spain, the opening sequence was actually twice as long, but when the show was brought to North America, a new theme song that was a faster tempo was made instead. The US version simply didn't use that "No one is better because he is bigger" nonsense. You can see what I mean here..

The English version certainly is interesting if you notice who was behind it in the first place. Some collaboration between Miramax Films (Bob and Harvey Weinstein's name is featured prominently as presenters in that US opening you linked to above) and the defunct Canadian studio Cinar Films who I think were involved in the dubbing of the show using their actors (except Plummer and Bosley surely).

While nice to hear a DVD release is being made available stateside, some can also check out more episodes of this show here if they like!

Hearing about you guys wanting to check out "Dogtanian & The Three Muskehounds", might I suggest "Around the World with Willy Fog" too? This is certainly one show I wish Nickelodeon had picked up a quarter century ago!
