Still only partway through

Still only partway through the podcast, but I'm so glad you're covering LoGH, in any form! I hadn't seen My Conquest before, thanks for pointing this out.

It seems like the first few episodes of the series would make a better intro to the universe, with My Conquest being a nice prequel, but I think you're right that one could see this without having watched the OVA series first.

I think the Free Planets Federation is meant to more closely resemble Taiwan than China. It's a smaller, democratic (both nominally *and* practically) nation not officially recognized by the larger empire its inhabitants originally emigrated from, like Taiwan (or maybe the Quebec? ^_^).

I watched the OVAs first, but

I watched the OVAs first, but the two movies flow so well into the beginning of the series that I like to introduce friends to LoGH by showing them the movies first.

My first intro was actually

My first intro was actually the first video I ever downloaded! Someone at Western Washington University had gotten ahold of the Battle of Amlitzer scene and encoded it in, I dunno, Quicktime 4 at 256x192. I was digging around on the library mainframe and found it, downloaded it, and watched it a million times. It wasn't until I saw the actual show at the anime club some years later that I realized what I'd been watching, but by then I was already hooked!

Comparisons

I'd say that the closest anime series (by other directors) to LoGH is Crest of the Stars, but I'd say the best comparison in terms of style and naval warfare presentation would be "Victory at Sea" or "Tora! Tora! Tora!" More than Honor Harrington I'd point to the source for *that* series, Horatio Hornblower, as a model for Yang and Reinhardt's advancements.

Alike in spirit but not in specifics

I think that the Hornblower series has a familiar spirit, mostly for Yang's side of things, but the specifics of the stories are almost totally different. Yang never intended to be a fleet commander, let alone the ruler of a nation-in-exile; if he'd had his way he'd have spent his life writing brilliant analyses that would be read by nobody.

As for Honor Harrington, we picked that mostly because we figured more people would have heard of it than would have heard of the Hornblower stuff. (Not only that, but I always got the sense that the Harrington series was based more directly on Nelson, and less on the Nelson-fanfic that was Hornblower.)

LoGH took me damn near 10

LoGH took me damn near 10 years to get through. It's best watched in like 3 or 4 episode clumps like every weekend.

There were some older characters who come up through the course of the series who were not stupid like Merkatz & Bewcock.

Dunno where yall got "Space China" from. The Free Planets Alliance is clearly "Space USA" with elections, corrupt officials, gun carrying conservatives, religious influence, etc...

But yeah Jeremy should finish it out.

Corrupt politicans is not something that's unique to the USA

The only reason that people think it's "like the USA" is that they live there. If anything it's more like Taiwan, in that it's a country formed by renegades whose legitemacy is not recognized by the ones they escaped from. (Throughout LoGH, I think the Empire guys never refer to the FPA as anything but "the rebels".)

The reason we say "China" rather than "USA" is that it's pretty clear that adhering to the rank structure is paramount. Even when the ones in charge are total idiots, are heroes try to find a way to work around them rather than just decking them and saying "screw the chain of command, I'm getting us outta here!" There's not much of the "rich people run everything" theme in the FPA that you would expect if it were a direct analog to the USA.

Names

Also they have names like Yang Wen-li and the Free Planets Alliance (which is not free) kind of sounds like the Public's Republic of China (which is not a republic).
