Dezaki is my favorite Director!

I'm a huge fan of vintage anime. I've seen pieces of this show, and I'll buy it one day. Very nice review guys. It's a nice change of pace from the "AWO- style" insanity you guy's have ventured into lately. One thing about the outdated tropes from the show like the racist characters. This was a product of it's time, and It reflected that era. It doesn't really bother me because it just shows how much things have changed. It's ironic because you don't get somber anime like this anymore, and we have to accept the good with the bad. On the other hand this was the same era of show's like Macross, and that was perhaps the first time I saw characters (of perhaps all races) portrayed in a realistic manner. Dezaki is my favorite director, and I wish I could get more of his stuff in America. His style a big part of anime, and things like the watercolor still are still used today.

This gem is something special that I really wish more people could see.

At least "Postcard Memories" never goes out of style.

Sports anime

It makes my day to hear such good thorough analysis on an all-time classic.

I agree with Mike that it's a shame the film drops its inner-battle premise along the way, and I agree with Jeremy that the film is at times chauvinist from a modern perspective.

These charges make me think of Touch 2: Sayonara no Okurimono, one of the most artistically interesting sports anime film of the 80s.

That film definitely aims to be a character study - the baseball games are subsidiary. And it works with some classic sports anime tropes in a more modern, gentle tone and art style, and to an enlightened outcome.

Might make a great companion podcast.
