This podcast needs an enema!

I actually prefer my Joker sans origin. I'm tired of origin stories, and it's long been a pet peeve of mine that every superhero movie has to go through the origin story, even in cases, such as Batman, where we already know what it is. My favorite thing about the Joker was that his origin was never clear.

Here's an obscure fact related to this film. The VHS version of Batman has one interesting artifact for cartoon fans. It has a Warner Bros. catalog ad featuring Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, in which the voices of Bugs and Daffy flip back and forth between Mel Blanc and Joe Alaskey. Apparently, the ad had been recorded with Blanc to advertise the catalog via an 800 number. But by the time the movie was released on VHS, Warner Bros. had switched to a 900 number. And so all references to the phone number had to be re-recorded with Alaskey, as Mel Blanc had passed away. It's very likely the first time we got to hear someone other than Mel Blanc voice these characters in an official capacity.

Hi, i'm Batman

One thing I always wonder about Batman movies is why, in just about every one, Bruce Wayne A: gets a girlfriend and B: tells her his secret identity. It's like the first thing he does. "Hi, I'm Bruce Wayne. At night I dress up in a bat costume and fight crime as the legendary Batman. Don't tell anyone, 'kay?"

I think the only times he doesn't do it is when he starts the movie already having a girlfriend who already knows.

"LIQUOR AND WHORES!!"

I was around when they made this movie, and I saw it not long after still as a kid, so I'm too attached and nostalgic to it to see the flaws in it. I simply see it as another great Burton/Elfman team-up film. However, as you guys wisely said in the podcast , I am also not going to compare this one to the Chris Nolan films because it was made at a different time by different people. So for me to put Nicholson's Joker up against Leger's Joker doesn't make sense, likewise the Batman(s) of Keaton and Bale, or any other similar character.

Sometimes an origin story works in a movie, and sometimes it also works to leave it vague.
I mean, one of the things that I really hated (among other things) about the live-action "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" is they tried to give the Grinch an origin and it totally fell flat because he ended up looking more like Scrooge than the evil little demon he should always be. You shouldn't sympathize with your villains too much BEFORE the story ends, or they end up not being that bad. (I mean, look at how bad-ass Darth Vader was before we got the prequel movies! Now, when someone watches all six movies in order, you feel nothing but pity for the guy as he's doing his evil deeds.)

Johnny Depp Batman is

Johnny Depp Batman is definitely not a great idea. Johnny Depp Joker would be pretty cool, but Johnny Johnny Depp Riddler would be the best.

Acting

That's Humbug to me. I prefer Johnny Depp to play Gambit. He's got the prescence of a dashing Cajun renegade w/ all the right moves.

Johnny Depp

Is freaking 50 years old (maybe slightly younger). REALLY? We can't find some young actor out of the bayou to twirl a bo?

Jeremy

Shout out to Zuey!! I want you to have all of my babies...and then miscarry them.

ANYWAY, Jeremy, based on what you/ve said, Christian Bale's characters in The Machinist, American Psycho and The Prestige might as well be the same guy; Bale brought absolutely nothing to the table on those.

I don't see your hate for Bale, but I agree that he is definitely not the best Batman. He makes a good Bruce Wayne, though.

I don't know about Keaton's Bruce Wayne ("You wanna get nuts? Let's get nuts!"), but I think if he could have had as maneuverable a costume as Bale has in the Nolan films, he would be the best Batman, by far. Still, with the stiff Bat costume, I still think he's top 2 or 3.

I think Nolan gives Batman a more "real" fighting style, which looks like a typical street fight. In Nolan's last film, I would like to see Batman kicking ass like a martial artist would. It is an 8 year time skip between films, so I would hope Batman has become a better fighter.

You're casting Bruce Wayne, not Batman

The thing is, in a movie, Batman is the suit. It's a full-body costume with a big cape and a mask that covers the face except for the jaw. Unless it's a closeup shot, there could be anyone in there--i.e. a stuntman.

When you're casting Batman, you aren't casting Batman; you're casting Bruce Wayne.

That said, I think Bale works as Wayne in Nolan's movie, and Keaton would not. I think Keaton does an okay job as Bruce Wayne, though, if you accept the notion of "unassuming nebbish" rather than "brooding loner".

Also loved Bale in the Fighter. Jeremy, he's a great actor :)

I saw this when I was in high school in the theatre with a group of friends. The crowd was going nuts over the movie. A really fun time and good flick in its day. It was pretty controversial that it didn't look like the old show, but once people saw the new batmobile I think people fell into line. I remember MTV having a contest where you could win one of the cars from the movie :) I agree with people who don't compare this to the Nolan films since they're just totally different takes on Batman, both well executed.

Fun podcast to listen too. Missed Mike, but enjoyed hearing Dylan's comic info. and comments.

Approval

Everyone in 1989 fell into line when they saw the trailer on TV when the Batwing dive down into action. I know I did.

Honestly I think everyone who has played Batman has done well enough in different ways, except Val Kilmer.

WTH?

What did Val do wrong? I think all Val Kilmer's ever done wrong is move next to a donut shop. :)

Remember when Michael Keaton

Remember when Michael Keaton playing Batman was controversial? Dr Demento used always play this song when the movie was out.

This looks familar. If I know better, I would say the music video once appeared on The Disney Channel if not MTV.

It was a big cover song at the time, Its one if those rare times where the satire version of the song is better than the original.

Understood

Yes, I can see why this one would be better. Also, I had no idea this was Wally Wingert's finest peaks in pop culture since it coincided with the whole Burton Bat-Hype controversy of the late 80s.

I remember it was a big deal

I remember it was a big deal that Michael Keaton was going to be cast as Batman, but in the end I liked him in that role for the two films that he was in. But I always loved this satire song, especially the part about Warner Brothers in the song.

Also I believe the only reason why Prince did some songs for the Batman films was that he was signed to Warner Brothers as the time.

Cheers!
