It is a shame that Breathed

It is a shame that Breathed would hate it in the end despite what a few people I know would say about the special in general (he was a producer on it too), I felt for an attempt at animating the familiar Bloom County guys we knew and enjoyed, it was rather pretty OK if rough around the edges. I see a familiar animator out there took a crack at doing Opus in CG some years back.

I use to read Bloom County in the daily section of my local paper, as they never had the Sunday strips at all (often only seeing them on occasion from a Detroit paper). The 1980's "disappearing small town" thing brings Michael Moore's first film "Roger and Me" to mind for me. Apart from the human characters from Bloom County not showing out in Outland, Steve Dallas did eventually appear towards the end of that strip, and would also appear in the later "Opus" strip too (seems to be a thing that Breathed often brought some of these guys back sooner or later, as "Outland" was suppose to be all original, new guys until Opus and Bill showed up.

Apart from "Wings That Work", Breathed had written a few other storybooks involving Opus in them like "Goodnight Opus". I think "Wings That Work" isn't necessary supposed to take place in the "Bloom County" world most people may think it is (often referring to this as the "Bloom County Special" anyway).

Jeremy's memory of seeing this reminds me of the best memory of the special when it first aired 20 years ago (I was 14 then). What made watching that a little special for me is that the day after the special aired, some slashed all the bus tires for the school district so we didn't get to go to school that day (it might've been the last day before winter break too).

Though you guys stated a DVD isn't available for this, it was released on DVD a few years ago by Universal. It's usually available around the holidays in the usual places.
