4 comments postedHey guys I'm glad to see you guys are doing a Gundam podcast again . Just a question ; Are there any good Gundam OAV's out there ? The ones I've watched {F91/Endless Waltz} were not good by any stretch of the imagination.
I'm just asking about the OAV's because sometimes I want to watch some GUNDAM but not invest 50 episodes for my fix.
Keep up the good work !
We are just trying to spread it out so it's not Gundam every week, which we could definitely do.
F91 is not an OAV, it is a theatrical movie. But there are certainly good Gundam OAVs, we podcasted on O8th MS Team earlier which is great, but I also really like 0080: War in the Pocket, which is a smaller, more personal Gundam war story, but is really pretty great, so I definitely recommend those.

Sorry Jeremy , I'm getting my terms confused :) I think I meant movies , but you've given me some great OVA suggestions . THANKS !
The bad thing about most Gundam MOVIES is that most of them are either compilations (i.e. a 26 episode series condensed down to 2 hours) or the continuation of a series (as in the case of Endless Waltz, which was both an OAV AND a compilation move, which was actually longer than the OAV, go figure). In order to really "get" EW, you need to have seen the Gundam Wing series first. It's a very weak film as just a stand alone movie. Char's Counterattack may work better as a stand alone film, but you need to at least have a basic understanding of the whole Amuro/Char relationship and the Federation/Zeon/Titan/AEUG story, as well as newtypes. F91, on the other hand, was meant to be a full series, but its production was plagued with problems (actually 13 episodes were written) and it was decided to just cut the story down to a movie and resulted in a substandard product. That said, I don't really think any of the movies are best had by themselves, they really only serve to enhance the larger "Gundam" story, if that makes sense.
As for Gundam OAV/OVAs, I think 0080 is probably your best bet. It's one of the shorter OVAs and at only two DVDs is not as much of a financial obligation. The story is one of the better stories, IMHO. The MS action is top-notch as well.
The 08MST series is available in a box set, and can be had for around $35 bucks, which is about the same as you'd pay to get 0080. 08MST is probably my favorite "One Year War" series.
0083: Stardust Memory is pretty good. The MS action is probably the best of the UC Gundam stories, and the story is decent, but it is a four DVD series, and I don't think it's been released in any form other than simply individual discs, so if you want to check that one out, I'd suggest buying the series used or Netflix or something.
Of course, the real "meat" of the Gundam story is found in the actual TV series, so those, unfortunately for those of us that are concious of our pocketbooks, are really your best option.
