"You folks mentioned cameos

"You folks mentioned cameos of pop comic western icons like Spidey, Batman & Robin, & Star Wars stuff, but I think you folks forgot to mention that Captain American, Conan, Superman & Wonder Woman, & Ming The Merciless were there too."

Well, we weren't providing a list of everyone who appeared in the episode, just some highlights.

"Whether your future crits for shows like Gurren Lagan, Fooly Cooly, Gunbuster, etc. would be granted 'epic' or 'fail' you'll definitely be stirring up a hornet's nest. The nest that I'm speaking of in question are the fanbases. Having listened to your shows in the past, you're ready to take hits from everything.

Whatever the outcome, it's pretty obvious that you're going to take ugliest hits in the history of your podcast."

Yeah, I kind of doubt that. Lucky Star is the kind of thing that gets people up in arms. I don't think our controversial "Gunbuster is a good show" stance will get a lot of people up in arms, but we'll see.

"On a downside, I want to say that I'm kind of disappointed that you folks didn't finish the MTV series because you folk still left out some other cool shows on MTV Animation.

Why did you limit the format to 'MTV Animation of the Month'? I don't get that man. I don't mean to sound ungrateful--I just feel that it's great that you're giving Gainax a full coverage span, but I also feel that it's a disappointing you gave MTV-A the short end of the stick."

We spent an entire month talking about it and you think we gave it the short end of the stick? Sorry, this is not the MTV podcast. We may talk about more MTV animated shows in the future, but we already devoted a whole month to it. We may not have discussed Liquid Television at length but we did talk a lot about Beavis and Butt-head and Aeon Flux, two shows from Liquid Television.

If your gonna bring up those

If your gonna bring up those shows, you forgot about "The Stifl and Olly Show" as well as 3-South to add.

I actually watched Downtown, great show. I think all it really needed was 13 episodes but still had the potential to go on, kinda like Mission Hill. I did like the nerd references too on how Alex stayed up all night playing Starcraft, stated that the goth chick Serena was "harder to get to than beating the final boss on Doom II" and their view on (at that time) anime culture where grown muscular men dressed up like sailor moon and yelled out robot attacks before getting pummeled to the ground from the animated Undertaker. Its a pretty rather amusing show to watch, and it was nominated for an Emmy from what i read on Wiki.

Have you seen Gainax's

Have you seen Gainax's latest show, Hanamaru Kindergarten?

Also I watched Honneoymise yesterday and I couldn't get past the 30 min mark. Sorry, it LOOKED nice but was SO boring.

Semi-relating to what this podcast was about, look at this.

attempted troll is attempted

Between misspelling Honneamise and the actual content of your statement about it, I'm tempted to dismiss it as a troll.

However, assuming you're serious, I think it's just about time for you to admit that you don't like high-quality anime in general - you only like anime that tickles your particular niche interests. As such, it's not really very useful for you to comment that you were bored by a well-regarded anime film - because the only way it would avoid boring you would be to fit into those narrow categories that you enjoy (robots, titties, light comedy).

If it's a troll, why did you answer?

I mean, the whole purpose of a troll is to get people to reply, so...you replied...?

It's part of an ongoing

It's part of an ongoing dialogue between Vincent and the rest of us where he tries to explain his opinions about anime, and generally everyone responding to him is confused by it. I didn't mean to accuse him of trolling; just to point out that he inadvertently sounds like a troll.

I never troll. Besides, I

I never troll. Besides, I think I've tuned my tastes to be like those of the Japanese otaku. Remember, Honneamise bombed in Japan. I like my pandering anime.

Nope.

No, we have not seen Hanamaru Kindergarten and really have zero interest in watching shows about kindergarten, being neither children nor parents.

These feel like "The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny", w00t.

The 'megazord' you speak of is the DynaRobo from "Kagaku Sentai Dynaman" (1983).

Dynarobo

I knew I recognized that robot! That's the one from the parody on USA Network back in the day!

Hmm.

I'm not sure how a podcast on that would go. I mean, it's a parody to begin with.

At least you tried. I'll give you that. Not everything on MTV was that memorable besides the few shows I cared to see like The Head and Daria. "Downtown" is quite an overlooked masterpiece according to some, but I felt you at least nailed a few if only talking about specific things like the Beavis & Butt-Head movie in relation to the Liquid TV origins.

"Err...yeah but... what about Wonder Showzen & the rest of MTV Animation that's worth a damn?

Will there be a sequel to your tribute?"

Well, perhaps if we wait until August of 2011, there'll be another one to coincide with MTV's hushed 30th birthday (they definitely don't care either way since they've dropped the "music" in their namesake)!

MTV

We'll likely do some more MTV animation in the future (as it's mostly pretty interesting stuff) but we're in the midst of our Gainax-palooza right now!

Gurren and EVA and possible references to Tim Curry? I'm in!

I just read that the first

I just read that the first one was drawn on clear bags from the supermarket instead of acetate.

Really?

I find this super hard to believe. Is this maybe one of those joke explanations from Otaku no Video or something? How could you keep that still enough to draw on?

http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=16139

"General Products was an exhibitor for DAICON, and one day they decided they could put their skilled efforts into making a sort of theme film for the festival. Shot on an 8mm film and with plastic bags from the supermarket as cels, they created the OP film "DAICON III." People who worked on this will later go on to become one of the top anime creators of our time - Anno Hideaki (director of Neon Genesis Evangelion), Sadamoto Yoshiyuki (character designer from Neon Genesis Evangelion), Yamaga Hiroyuki (producer for various GAINAX anime), and Maeda Mahiro (most Americans will know him as the guy who did "The Second Renaissance" in the Animatrix). "

Is it true? I don't know. But either way, it is an indisputably awesome story.

Plastic Bags

That's not exactly a reliable information source and I still find that very difficult to believe. Makes a good story though!

Read this further

You know, I read that further that's actually mostly BS. Inexperienced, untrained fans? Uh no, Daicon IV especially not. I'm pretty sure that's Ichiro Itano action (Anime News Network agrees) for crying out loud. 1983 was the year AFTER Macross and Itano worked on Gundam in the late '70s. That thread is not useful information.

I do have a copy of The

I do have a copy of The Notenki Memoirs someplace where I think it was discussed how they did made that first film without cels. I think it had something to do with them taking one cel to some guy who would cut out plastic sheets to use and they had him make them several thousands to use or so, but they weren't nearly the same consistency as real cellulose acetate otherwise, though I personally thought they were more like overhead transparency sheets to begin with. Obviously by the time they did Daicon IV they probably had the real deal to work with, though both films were still photographed using a Fujica model "Single 8" movie camera, this is the reason for the soft nature of the resolution since 8mm film is half the width of 16mm anyway. Single 8 as a format is different from "Super 8mm" in that the cartridge was designed and patented by Fujifilm themselves, and is often said to be far superior over Kodak's super 8mm film/cameras in allowing for such tricks like backwinding the film for double exposures, dissolves and other effects (as seen in the Daicon films).

Now THIS I can believe. Plastic bags, no, the plastic from overhead projectors I could buy.

I knew you would. Too often

I knew you would. Too often some animation books would suggest that as an alternative to using cels if you were to make your own animated film (one even said sheet protectors as well), as well as acrylic paints like the type you find at craft stores in those bottles to use for painting.

Sorry for the one message that was flagged for spam, though I was pointing out very similar fan-made films in the Daicon III/IV tradition that also got made in Japan as well that people can find pretty good on YouTube as we speak. It definitely sparked a bit of interest if only for those that wanted to show off their talents or hone in on skills for future employment.
