Destroy All Podcasts DX 58 - Super Dimension Century Orguss 02
Hosts: Jeremy, Mike, Zuey
This is about Manning and only Manning. Nothing else matters.
Click [HERE] to have Manning sell you out. But you know, in a charming way.
More after the cut.
Taii isn't as cute as he used to be.
"So, you want to see my tentacles?"
More than just an Orguss repaint.
The Orguss 02.
The main man Manning.

13 comments postedOh man. Orguss 02 has to be one of my most favourite OVAs like ever.
The only thing that really crapped it up for me was Manga's iffy translation.
Yeah, Manga Entertainment used to advertise this one alot on their video tapes. I think it was one of the previews on their Macross Plus tapes, but I could be mistaken.
At least the dub isn't original Orguss and Macross II bad (U.S. Renditions/L.A. Hero). When you have untrained persons doing bit parts (check out translator Trish Leudox as Wendy Rider in Macross II) and enough echo to make it sound like you recorded in a public bathroom, it's bad. The Orguss 02 dub sounds dry and broken, but at least there's no echo.
They also decided to rename the robots from "armors" in the original Japanese to "Decimators," which unfortunately carries over to the subtitles.

Lo and behold...upon re-watch, I also liked Orguss O2, surprisingly more than the first series on a scale of pure fun factor alone...as long as I focus on the action, some of the characters (Manning does steal the show all the way through) and appreciating the very blatant or more thinly veiled WWII references, in aesthetics and even in a couple of events.
Yes, this is a world where fantasy meets sci-fi (giant robots!) meets WWII (as-seen-in-movies?). Not enough people seem to notice this (or say they do), apparently, but you caught that, so kudos.
Keep in mind I've also learned to ignore the under-thought series of connection(s) to the original. Still, that doesn't matter. The nature of the whole concept allows for alternate earths and realities to exist, so I assume that explains away any and all inconsistencies, with the original (including its mucking up with the ending, ambigious as it was) or with anything else. Down the void with that!
So yes, like you guys said, the audience really doesn't need to see the original to enjoy it. It's probably much better that way, in fact.
Btw, I believe the Manga Ent. version screwed up the OPs and EDs in the dub track, not just the translations...
What is up with the Roy Focker (and clones) obsession with these last two podcasts? Are you going to review the third Gundam "Encounters in Space" compilation movie so you can fawn over Sleggar?
Although I do admit that Roy (and clones) are the unrestrained American and far more interesting than the subdued Japanese characters in these series.
Sleggar is ALSO awesome, but he can't be a Roy Focker clone since he came first. Also he slaps Mirai.
And don't forget the Cosmo Tiger pilot in Yamato! He may not be blond, but Akira Kamiya did his voice!

Kato or Yamamoto? Wait. Wikipedia will tell me... it's Kato.
I keep forgetting Gundam came first. It might be that I saw Robotech/Macross on TV in the mid 80s and saw the Gundam compilation movies on VHS in 1998. Sleggar's also cool because when his core booster gets messed up by the big zam, and he decides to do a suicide run, he looks like he doesn't care. Cool, but a little odd.
So the OP/ED thing, they actually put OP2 on every episode except two (I think episodes four and five?) which is confusing, but OP2 is the one I like.

I watched this several years ago when it was on Sputnik 7. I don't remember much about it other than it just seemed like generic fodder at the time, nothing really special about it. Maybe I should watch it again.
Yeah, well, Sputnik7 was grainy dub-only streaming video about the size of a thumbnail. Give it another shot on a TV. Everything looked bad on Sputnik7. :)

I have to admit, my only interaction with the original Orguss was renting the LA HERO dubbed VHS of volumes 1 and 2 from the local video store back in the day, and then I came across Orguss 2 in the dollar bin at another video store. I saw how things wrapped together but I didn't really like the series.
Orguss added.
Ok, I already told Andrew over at MW, DO A YUKIKAZE review!!! It's the fact that IT DOES feel like BrokebackMT that makes me wonder what are you guys gonna say about it!... LOL
Brokeback Mountain Fighter Pilots, SCRAMBLE!

After listening to your review of this show a few weeks ago I decided to check it out and I really enjoyed it. I liked the fantasy and steam punkness and the character designs, etc. were the kind of early mid 90's style that I like in anime. Thanks for the good review.
