Destroy All Comics - Golden Gate Riot At The Fishbowl

So we've got a new page of Golden Gate Riot up this week, as expected. In case you missed it, I also uploaded an extra page a few days ago to celebrate getting 500 followers on Twitter! Yay! Don't get too excited, though, because that number has since gone down. Boo.

This comic and the previous one feature a concert venue called The Fishbowl, which is very much based on a real place. When I was a teenager, I didn't live in San Francisco. Instead, I lived in Sunnyvale, a town about 45 minutes south of San Francisco, or if you drive like I did back then, half an hour. Sunnyvale is actually closer to San Jose, but no one outside of this area knows what the hell Sunnyvale is. Sunnyvale is one of those places that is a suburb with nasty spots that are basically urban. The high school I went to used to have major gang problems, though it seems pretty cleaned up today. When I went there it wasn't exactly 21 Jump Street, but other kids broke into my locker and stole my backpack, there were a number of high profile suicides, and several girls were pregnant. I don't think there were any murders or anything, but it was kind of seedy.

Anyway, in 1998 my sister was a member of the Sunnyvale Teen Council, which was a project set up by the City of Sunnyvale Recreation Department to provide things for teenagers to do aside from vandalism, video games, and underage drinking/sex/drugs. One of the council members suggested a teen coffee house. I'm not sure whose idea it was, but the city worked out a deal to borrow a local Le Boulanger bakery/café's building on Saturday nights for like coffee and poetry or whatever. My sister asked me to help setup the night it opened and I agreed. I was probably 17 by this point and usually my friends and I would drive to San Francisco and see live bands on the weekends. But I agreed to help. Actually, that first night it wasn't called The Fishbowl because it didn't have a name and they were looking for suggestions. I don't remember who suggested The Fishbowl, but as I recall, there were no suggestions so it won by default. It's not a bad name.

So the first couple of weekends there was indeed coffee and poetry and stuff. And then it became the local concert scene and I was ecstatic about the change. The only downside is that it was harder to chat up the ladies with local bands destroying your eardrums.

The Fishbowl as it appears in Golden Gate Riot is not exactly accurate to the reality of the place. For one, it seems a lot roomier. For another, the stage was much shorter than that. Also Flawed Logic never played there. Flawed Logic was a real band, though. They were  a local punk band from Idaho Falls. My good friend Dustin Verburg was their frontman and we shared our joys and sorrows over the Internet after countless teenage nights seeing and trying to make music (and trying to figure out dating). So while Flawed Logic may never have actually played The Fishbowl, they were a big part of that era in my life. You can hear some of their music for free on the Flawed Logic Archive.org page. My favorite Flawed Song was always "What Can I Say". Oh, and before I forget, and yeah, since the whole comic is about San Francisco, I relocated The Fishbowl to San Francisco. Call it artistic license.

Here's a vintage article on The Fishbowl getting renewed for 1999-2000. My favorite part is this quote: "We might make it more of an acoustic place where kids could come and perform," Larkin said. "We would like it to be more well-rounded entertainment, not just bands." That DID NOT HAPPEN. I'm guessing all the punk, ska, and indie kids rocking out to awesome bands instead of the poetry night and acoustic crap the city was  hoping for is what lead directly to the demise of The Fishbowl. There was also definitely an article in local Sunnyvale newspaper The Sun about the first weekend of The Fishbowl, but I can't find my paper copy anymore. The Fishbowl was actually the cover story of The Sun that day and the two girls I was dancing with were on the cover but I was mysteriously cropped out. HMMM.

But whatever, it was glorious while it lasted.
