heh

I remember when I first broke my 4 figure toy cherry, though it's more accurate to call it a rape as I wouldn't have gone 4 figures if not for Masato being "nice enough" to increase my max bid without asking me on the C3 I managed to score..... at least he was nice enough to not charge me fees for the amount he went over -_-. ah sweet sweet memories..

suggestive

I'm sorry, but Dairugger's bright red point is just above Dave's crotch, and it's really kind of distracting.

Yes, Super Robots are very

Yes, Super Robots are very phallic, indeed. Plus, there's the Fruedian slip when Josh refers to Dave as "Sexy." Synchronicity? Better watch out, bro, or the old lady will put the kibosh on your toy collecting for good.

Did you just call me sexy,

Did you just call me sexy, too? I think what you mean to say is it's not Freudian if it's intentional?

question

within the context of the post, does anyone on this site know a good place or way to buy a marmit Daigokin- specifically the anime version of Andromeda and Deslar's ship..
They are never anywhere...they were posted on site (inc. this one) as coming soon...then that time expires and I can't find them anywhere...becoming like the "holy grail" item,s you mentioned...unfortunately

There's 4 or 5 Andromedas on

There's 4 or 5 Andromedas on Yahoo now, but no Desslar's ship. Looks like they can be quite expensive already though.

Re: Episode 2

Although I've broken my "three figure cherry", I think that I'll never go to four figures. Unless it's a Kamen Rider Suit or if I lose all sanity and masculinity I have and buy a Dollfie... but, that would have to wait till after college

Yeah, when I was in college,

Yeah, when I was in college, breaking 3 digits was a BIG deal. Not much money to spend...and it was either the Grendizer SoC...or food for a week! ;)

There's definitely an element of privilege in this hobby. It helps that we're a little older now (of the three of us in the video, I'm the youngest at 31), and we're pretty financially stable. We're certainly not worrying where our next meals are coming from, and that's more than can be said for a lot of Americans.

Anyway, I'm not saying that money is the critical factor in this hobby. A toy collection of nothing over $50USD is just as valid as one with pieces well into the thousands. Because of horridly dubbed super robot cartoons and the prevalence of Shogun Warriors and Voltron toys in the early 80's, many of us in our "toy generation" (certainly the three of us in the video) are drawn to the classic Japanese robot aesthetic. SoC's and other modern gokin are fine, but we'd probably prefer a Popy chogokin or Jumbo Machinder from the 70's.

Collecting, thus, becomes a hunt for vintage...and a pricey one at that! For guys like us, anyway, of our generation.

Oh, and Dave, don't sell yourself short, bruh: screw Freud--you're straight up and down dead sexy! ;P

Financially stable?

As soon as I read that, I flashed to an old joke from...uh, Police Squad, maybe? Somebody gets injured, concerned loved one asks how the patient is, doctor says "His condition is stable..... He's dead." And that's about how I feel these days.

Oh, and yay, a bunch of men think I'm sexy. Photobucket

It's crazy to think about,

It's crazy to think about, but like Nekrodave says in the video, at some point, everyone gets to this level, where all they need to complete/add to their collections is either:

a)- an item with a 4-figure price or more

b)- an item so rare and impossible to find, it's not available (it might only show up on Y!J or eBay once every few years or so, or the only ones known to exist are already owned by other collectors)

I broke my 4-figure cherry in 2007, and I am so ashamed of what I bought for that price.
Don't be like me. Take my advice to prevent buyer regret on a 4-figure purchase:

make sure it's older than you are,

don't tell your significant other,

make sure it's over 12 inches in height,

and that it's made of either die-cast, vinyl, or poly;

If it came out in the last 15 years, check yourself!
If your wife/husband will be angry with you, check yourself!
Over a grand, under a foot tall, check yourself!
Not made of the Holy Trinity of Toy Making (chogokin, sofubi, machinder)? check yourself!

try to break as few of these rules as possible, and you will avoid the shame you will feel when you get your credit card bill.
Maybe.

Big R what was the toy?

Big R what was the toy? There is no shame in this hobby, just insanity.

I myself just plunked down $250 on a built M1 Godzilla vs. Biollante 1/1 scale bust (that's the "suit" scale) and probably won't regret it even if I find out I overpaid. That's because three figures is getting to be the norm. I can see the day coming when I drop four, although it's still a ways off for me.

The toy was a GX-01RB. I

The toy was a GX-01RB. I did sell it four months later for a very very slight profit, but overall it was a poor choice to spend that much money on.

Well, I agree that buyer's

Well, I agree that buyer's remorse on something a purchase that big is terrifying...but at the same time, I think we're all nuts (in a good way!) for the stuff we collect. These are luxury items, whether they're modern baubles from Walmart or antiques from a private collection.

The one main point I have to disagree with is NOT telling your significant other. If your hobby means enough to you to plunk g's down on it...then you just can't be ashamed of it. Don't hide it...proclaim that score to the world...and if your significant other gets heated about something you're so passionate about, well maybe they should be your significant other.

Luckily, I don't think I've

Luckily, I don't think I've ever had "buyer's remorse", per se, with the exception of the Art Storm Hedorah which I hated literally from the moment I opened it. But certainly not on a big ticket item. What sometimes does happen to me is that I will be initially underwhelmed when a toy that I've longed for for a long time arrives. On the screen and in my mind, it's almost mythical, but when you hold it in your hands... it's just a toy like any other. However, there's usually a sort of delayed appreciation for it that happens with me. A day or two later I'll just catch a glance of it on my shelf and think "wait... holy moly! that's mine!" It's weird. Sometimes the first realization and happiness occurs when I am doing my regular searches and it occurs to me that I don't have to search for it anymore. To me, that is the ultimate crossing off of the list. That's when it's real.

But as for The Big R's rules, I must say that the only one I agree with is the one about the last 15 years. Maybe even 20 years. I can't think of a single thing in that time frame that strikes me as being worth a grand or more. But although I'm a jumbo guy, I can see the value of smaller toys and I'm sure there are tins out there that are worth more than a grand....right? :)
