NYTF2013: Mattel - Masters of the Universe

Masters of the Universe

So here's the deal - I am the last person that should be writing about Masters of the Universe (MOTU). I dislike the line, and I just have no interest in it whatsoever.

The Mattycollector event is the least fun event at Toy Fair. All the He-Man fans get herded into a small area where they bump and jockey for position to get the first pictures of the beloved line. I ended up taking more images of the crowd than I did the toys. It's insane.

All of this for a toyline that people do nothing but complain about.

Anyway, the big reveal was the Castle Greyskull, which apparently the prototype for was just completed a few days before. Of course, the instant fans saw it, they started complaining about the size on twitter.

When asked what he had to say to fans complaining that it wasn't as big as promised, Scott of Matty collector said "Cancel your order"

I'd say it looks pretty cool. There's a ton more images in the Gallery.

Also on display were a bunch of MOTU figures that I couldn't make heads or tail of. Apparently they are doing some Filmation characters for the first time, and it will be a six figure subscription.

Well, as an avid collector of

Well, as an avid collector of the line, I gotta say: The best way to collect it is to ignore a vast majority of the fans. Whoo boy...it just never ends. You open your doors to the fans and they all pour in. As usual, the squeaky wheel gets the greese, but once they found out that Mattel had thier ears to the wheel they ALL started squeaking as loud as they could.

On top of that, since this is an online-only toyline, people seem to think it has more problems than other toylines. Problem is that every mistake makes it into the hands of fans, whereas on the toy shelves the mistakes would be seen and left on the shelves. They are UTTERLY APPALLED by every single little paint smear or a loose joint.

Ah well; I am fully capable of enjoying it. It's a fantastic toyline (if the wackyness if your thing, and it so totally is for me) so thankfully they've kept it going amidst all the artifical smoke (and thier admittedly rocky online system).
