Author: Keith Aiken A SCIFI JAPAN EXCLUSIVE In 1992, the first major studio attempt at an American Godzilla film began when Toho and Sony’s TriStar Pictures agreed to a Hollywood production with “A-list stars, screenwriter, and director”. Jan De Bont (SPEED) was signed to direct a screenplay by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio (PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN). Designs for an updated Godzilla and additional creatures were created; storyboards were drawn; sets and locations were selected; a production team assembled... and then everything fell apart when the studio canceled the movie, supposedly over a budget dispute with the director. TriStar later revamped the picture with INDEPENDENCE DAY filmmakers Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin. This second version of an American GODZILLA was released in May 1998 to disappointing box office and scathing reviews. SciFi Japan’s four part overview of Jan De Bont’s GODZILLA is now collected in one “monster-sized” article! Continued...
